It鈥檚 getting darn cold here. We were not ready for 21掳C and partly cloudy. We stretched our stay in our hotel to the maximum, leaving right at the 11:00 checkout. We found one of the many beach bars on the port and plopped down until a little before our ferry鈥檚 arrival. While technically on the beach, we weren鈥檛 on the sand. With a decent cappuccino it was the perfect time to relax.
Kythnos not being very touristy, the amount of fast connexions to it from other islands is limited. The only real option for us was a two-hour ride on a slow ferry. Our journey started with a trip back to the 1990s and a visit to the ferry office to have our tickets printed on real paper. Our ferry kept the time travel experience going. Built in 1990, the Dionisios Solomos travels from Piraeus (near Athens) to Kythnos, Seriphos, Sifnos, Milos, Kimolos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Ios, Thera (Santorini) and back. Visiting most of these islands every day. I would bet the ferry hasn鈥檛 seen much change since it was put in service. It is nevertheless comfortable and offers plenty of outdoor seating that we would have enjoyed if it wasn鈥檛 so darn cold.
We arrived in Kythnos a little after 17:00, did our laundry, drank some wine on our terrace, went for diner at the local taverna (Bizantio Yalos), froze our asses some more and I suggested we make our way to Athens tomorrow. Karine was at first taken aback by my suggestion and asked why. I only needed to point out my number one reason: 25掳C, the weather forecast for Athens tomorrow and Saturday. We promptly agreed that it was better than overcast and 21掳C changed our plans to leave tomorrow at 18:55 on the trusty Dionisios Solomos. We鈥檒l still get to explore the island and get a full free day Saturday in the warmth. The numerous cats coming to say hi (and hope for a portion of our fish) was good dinner company however. A redeemable point for Kythnos if I ever saw one.
