For our last full day on Sifnos, we went hiking again. The temperature is heading down over the next few days making beach days over for us. Who would want to go in the water when the water temperature is higher than the air temperature? It鈥檚 fun going in but terrible coming out.
We started our day by heading to the only island roaster located, for some strange reason no one could explain, at the other end of the island, near a beach and not much else but a large鈥sh church. Despite this, Way Cup Roaster produced a pretty good, if classic Italian, espresso. I鈥檓 not sure I would have driven the 20 minutes it takes from the port city to get there every morning but nevertheless glad we stopped on our way to our hike.
Trail number 4 is a loop from Platis Yialos (Gialos Beach) going east around a mountain to meet Paralia Fikiada (Fikiada Beach?) and back to its starting point by following the sea, mostly. While it did afford us beautiful views that are hard to get in any other way, it also goes through a couple of abandoned farms and what sure seems like the hunting grounds for what ever preys on sheep and goats on the island. We encountered pieces of both on the trail. For people reading this that might be sensitive, plan your trip with your meal after the hike maybe.
Animal carcass aside, it鈥檚 an enjoyable twelve kilometres hike and we would recommend it. We stopped by one of the beach bars on our way back for a light snack then headed back to drop off our car; fuelling at one of the few gas stations on the island. The stations are all conveniently located a kilometre from one another making fuel delivery easier I鈥檓 sure.
We had dinner at the local Italian restaurant. We鈥檝e had Greek of different islands for twenty five days now and felt we could change it up a little. Ristorante Italiano Da Claudio does try to be an Italian restaurant and does serve Italian dishes, but remains an approximation of the real thing. Nevertheless our palates were cleansed and we鈥檒l be ready for some authentic Kythnos cuisine tomorrow.
