We got an early start to a 10-hour drive. We went from almost the southern tip of New Zealand to about two-thirds of the way up the South Island. It’s a crazy drive we’ve done to avoid 10cm of rain. The original plan was to go see glaciers (we have to remind ourselves what winter looks like after all), but walking in torrential rain to see ice didn’t excite us that much so we packed up the car and drove all the way to Kaikoura in order to go whale watching (tomorrow of course, there’s no nighttime whale watching obviously).

The theme of the day was drive for a long time, stop for a viewpoint, take some pictures and get back on the road. It might sound boring, but really, for most of the drive, you would think you’re an F1 driver just trying to get to 100kph. You keep having to go through tight turns trying to avoid cliffs, rivers and any other natural formation the road designer wanted to avoid (which is pretty much any natural formation).

In any case, we’ve made it under 11 hours with food and picture stops along the way. This goes to show that not only do we both eat fast, but Karine is a picture-taking machine, managing breathtaking shots of nature in seconds.
