We spent the day making our way to Tofino with an obligatory stop in Nanaimo to grab some of its namesake bars. Turns out Nanaimo is nothing to write home about. Well... other than what I’m writing here, I guess. It might be the very gray weather imposed by both the smoke and the cloudy sky. Other than the smoke we could guess at, we could see actual clouds in the sky.

The almost five-hour drive went well, other than an unscheduled stop for major construction. The “highway” was being renovated along the coast. There was so little space to manoeuvre that they let some traffic pass, then stopped traffic for 20 minutes to give a chance for the construction crew to do actual work.

Tofino is quiet in the rain. We walked to the diner, and even if every spot is packed, there are very few people in the street. It’s almost as if everyone said, "Let’s go out for dinner at 17:00,” and we, not being aware of the coordinated effort, happen to want to eat around 17:30. I must point out, however, that half the restaurants are closed this being a Monday and all. Still, we managed to find refuge at “The Shelter”. I’ve not seen a more aptly named restaurant since walking in on a cold, rainy day. It’s also well-rated and provides good food.

Tomorrow we’re going to look for whales and bears to observe. The weather models predict the rain will end about an hour before we clear moorings and head out to sea. Hopefully, the prediction holds.

The only picture for the day. The view from the condo we have for the next two nights. Fingers crossed for better pictures tomorrow.
